JSCM Bibliometrics
One of the projects we have been working on at JSCM is using bibliometric tools to better understand the landscape of operations and supply chain management research. We have traditionally used impact factors (https://www.journalofsupplychainmanagement.com/new-blog/2018/6/27/jscm-rankings) citations and downloads (https://www.journalofsupplychainmanagement.com/new-blog/2018/7/12/opnvyv0or5wrnf2q98i3p870gfms4m) as rather blunt measures of the Journal’s impact. But the free bibliometric tools provided by “VOSviewer” allow for a much better understanding of an article’s reach and audience.
For example the following are for the Journal’s most downloaded and cited articles of all time, "Outsourcing: Transaction Cost Economics and Supply Chain Management" by Oliver E. Williamson and "Building a more complete theory of Sustainable Supply Chain Management using case studies of 10 exemplars" by Mark Pagell and Zhaohui Wu.

"Building a more complete theory of Sustainable Supply Chain Management using case studies of 10 exemplars" by Mark Pagell and Zhaohui Wu. has been cited over 415 times based on Web of Science data.
The networks provide detail that the numbers alone don’t. Four hundred plus citations in one field is different than laying the groundwork for subsequent work in both OSCM and the much wider sustainability domain. 26,000 downloads suggests that TCE is still highly relevant today – the network shows where and how that influence continues to occur.
We are just starting to learn to use these tools and we plan to do much more in the future. But in the meantime tell us what you think and if you have questions or suggestions please share them.
